I say that because I got the “tutorials” up and running, but couldn’t go much further. The tutorials I looked at were Milan Toth’s Getting Started with red5 server and the Flash Video tutorials at Flash Extensions that covered Red5.

My goals were to create a simple chat server, then learn about Shared Objects. Unfortunately, I got neither working, and was at a complete loss trying to even get some kind of simple logging setup on the server itself. The logging discussed on the tutorial site is no longer supported and the logging setup on the wiki didn’t seem to work, though I followed as best as I could.

So, more searching lead me to BlazeDS, the Adobe solution that has gone open source. One of the reasons for trying Red5 was I thought I could use it as an open source alternative to Electro Server but it seems like there’s not enough for me to really begin chewing on. I know Red5 should be able to handle it, but I don’t know where to really get started with it. BlazeDS on the other hand took no time to get a simple chat server going (since it’s just listening to events on a particular channel) and Remote/Shared Objects looks doable. I don’t know about the update time, so real time could be interesting, but I’m not going to true real time yet. The fact that there exists some games using BlazeDS (like WoB) tells me it’s possible however.
